KB Financial Group Partners With Domestic AI Chipmaker Rebellions
KB Financial Group signed a strategic partnership with South Korean AI semiconductor company Rebellions on May 27 to build financial infrastructure using domestically developed chips. Chairman Yang Jong-hee and Rebellions Representative Park Sung-hyun signed the agreement at KB Kookmin Bank's headquarters in Seoul.
Rebellions will supply AI inference infrastructure based on its neural processing units (NPUs) and related financial service technologies to KB Financial Group. In exchange, KB Financial will prioritize providing business operations support, funding, and employee assistance to Rebellions.
The two companies also committed to identifying joint projects that advance South Korea's AI ecosystem.
Why This Matters for Finance Leaders
Banks face mounting pressure to deploy AI systems faster than competitors. Using domestically made semiconductors reduces dependence on foreign suppliers and addresses supply chain vulnerabilities that have affected financial institutions.
A KB Financial spokesperson said the partnership will "strengthen KB Financial Group's AI competitiveness and secure global-level AI financial leadership."
KB's Long-Term Bet on Rebellions
KB Financial has backed Rebellions since 2022, when KB Investment participated in the company's Series A round. The company was valued at 3.4 trillion won and recently became the first recipient of direct investment from South Korea's National Growth Fund.
KB expanded the relationship in 2023 by including Rebellions in its startup program, KB Starters. KB Securities joined subsequent investment rounds, showing sustained group-level commitment.
