Korea and Google DeepMind Launch AI Partnership on AlphaGo's 10th Anniversary

South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT signed a memorandum of understanding with Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis on Thursday, establishing a research partnership that will span joint scientific projects, talent development, and AI safety standards. The agreement marks a decade since AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol in Go at the same Seoul venue.

The partnership, tied to Korea's "K-Moonshot" national AI research initiative, aims to connect DeepMind's research capabilities with South Korean science and technology innovation. Both sides will pursue joint research in life sciences, meteorology, and climate modeling-fields where AI can address complex scientific problems.

Research and Infrastructure

The two organizations will establish a cooperation hub centered on the National Science AI Research Center, launching in May. They plan to exchange technology, data, and researchers to accelerate research productivity using AI.

Google will open an AI Campus in Korea to work with domestic universities and startups. The company will offer internships for Korean researchers at DeepMind's facilities.

AI Safety and Standards

A significant focus of the agreement is responsible AI development. Both sides will conduct joint research on AI model safety evaluation, safeguard design, and testing methods. They will also discuss frameworks connected to the AI Safety Institute to establish standards for responsible AI use beyond competitive technology development.

Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said the partnership represents "a key opportunity for Korea to accelerate AI-based science and technology innovation."

Governance and Timeline

The organizations will form a joint working group for quarterly consultations and hold annual in-person meetings to define specific cooperation tasks.

Hassabis won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work developing AlphaFold, a protein structure prediction model that reduced analysis time significantly in life sciences research.
