LabCollector has released AI Co-Scientist, a suite of artificial intelligence tools that lets scientists query their lab data in natural language and generate scientific content directly within the platform. The update, announced today, aims to eliminate data-access bottlenecks that slow down research by turning ELN and LIMS records into an interactive knowledge layer.

Turning lab data into a conversational knowledge base

As research organizations accumulate growing volumes of experimental notes, protocols, inventory records, and reports, finding relevant information becomes time-consuming. AI Co-Scientist addresses this by letting scientists ask questions in everyday language and receive answers grounded in their actual stored data.

The system uses a retrieval architecture powered by semantic indexing and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Vector search and contextual retrieval technologies pull from internal knowledge sources - including ELN records, SOPs, sample data, PDFs, and stored images - before generating responses. This approach ensures that answers are based on real lab records, not generic AI outputs.

Key capabilities for research teams

Researchers can now ask natural-language questions such as "Show experiments involving this antibody" or "Which protocols mention this ELISA kit?" The system retrieves relevant results from LabCollector's database, helping teams make faster, data-driven decisions.

The update also introduces SmartSearch, an AI-powered feature that goes beyond traditional keyword matching. It interprets the meaning behind a query to uncover related experiments, documents, and protocols even when exact keywords aren't present. This helps scientists discover connections across projects that might otherwise remain hidden in complex data sets.

For visual communication, the AI Scientific Illustrator is a built-in editor within LabCollector ELN pages. Scientists can create publication-ready figures, flowcharts, and pathways using pre-made scientific stencils, editable elements, and AI-generated visuals. This reduces the need for external graphics software.

Flexible deployment for compliance needs

Recognizing that lab environments have differing security and compliance requirements, LabCollector supports connectivity with multiple AI platforms. These include OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, Mistral AI, Ollama, and private or on-premises LLM deployments.

"This open architecture enables organizations to implement AI strategies that align with their governance and security policies," the company said. The approach lets labs choose the AI infrastructure that fits their regulatory environment and data protection needs.
