Marketing Teams Shift Focus to Generative Engine Optimization as AI Services Go Mainstream
OpenAI's expansion of ChatGPT advertising into South Korea, Japan, the UK, Mexico and Brazil has accelerated corporate interest in generative engine optimization (GEO) - a strategy designed to make brand content more visible in AI-generated responses rather than traditional search results.
For years, marketers invested heavily in search engine optimization to secure prominent placement on Google and other search portals. That approach is giving way as early adopters and high-spending consumers increasingly rely on ChatGPT, Google Gemini and other generative AI services as their primary information source.
GEO works by labeling website content and data so AI systems can access and cite it without requiring companies to rebuild existing infrastructure. Ad-tech firms including Enliple, Plus Zero and Akamai Technologies have introduced GEO solutions in recent weeks.
Performance Gains Drive Adoption
A pilot test by South Korean data-tech company Enliple with a major duty-free retailer showed measurable results. Conventional search traffic increased 21.9% after GEO implementation, while AI-driven traffic rose 37.3%. Purchase conversions tied to actual transactions increased 63%.
Market research firm Dimension Market Research forecasts the global GEO market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 40.6% through 2034.
Samsung Securities said in a May report that "marketing strategies historically centered on keyword advertising and SEO are now rapidly expanding into AI response optimization and GEO."
AI Companies Push Official Content
Generative AI providers themselves are encouraging brands to submit official content. Naver plans to distribute guidelines this year to help creators improve the likelihood their content will be cited by AI systems. OpenAI and Google are simultaneously expanding advertising offerings tied to their platforms.
KPMG Korea stated in a May report that "GEO strategies optimized for AI environments are emerging as a new core competitive advantage for companies," noting that businesses must now design content for both human users and AI reasoning systems.
