Mayo Clinic and Microsoft Build Healthcare-Specific AI Model
Mayo Clinic and Microsoft announced a collaboration to develop a frontier AI model designed specifically for healthcare. The model will be owned by Mayo Clinic and made available through Microsoft's Azure Foundry APIs, giving organizations worldwide access to the technology.
The partnership combines Mayo Clinic's clinical expertise and de-identified patient data with Microsoft's AI capabilities and cloud infrastructure. The resulting model will synthesize diverse clinical data to support earlier diagnoses, more personalized treatment decisions, and better patient outcomes.
Why Healthcare Needs Purpose-Built AI
General-purpose AI models lack the clinical context and longitudinal understanding required for healthcare applications. Healthcare AI demands rigorous governance, real-world validation, and deep knowledge of how diseases progress over time.
Mayo Clinic will initially deploy the model within its own clinical environment, where physicians can continuously test and refine it before broader release. This approach lets the organization validate the model against real patient cases before other healthcare systems use it.
