McDonald’s Introduces AI-Powered Magic Stories to Boost Family Loyalty

On 27 June 2025, McDonald’s launched Magic Stories in the Netherlands — an AI-driven storytelling feature integrated into the Family interface of its app. This innovation turns every visit, whether dining in or ordering delivery, into a personalized animated story featuring the family itself. Over time, these stories create a unique collection of memorable moments for families to revisit.

Consumer loyalty is increasingly difficult to secure due to rising expectations and competitive pressures. McDonald’s blends storytelling with generative AI technology to form a deeper connection with families, making each interaction meaningful and personal.

Personalized Storytelling at the Heart of Family Moments

“No family is the same, and with Magic Stories, we create a personal connection by making families the main characters,” said Malou Buné, marketing manager digital at McDonald’s Netherlands. The core insight is simple: every McDonald’s visit carries a story, whether it’s a post-soccer game celebration, a birthday gathering, or a cozy night in with takeout.

Mikko Pietilä, regional CCXO of NEXT at TBWA, explained, “Each visit unlocks a new chapter in a family’s story, turning brand storytelling into something personal and dynamic for the first time.” This approach transforms ordinary interactions into an ongoing narrative that families can engage with repeatedly.

How Magic Stories Works

The feature uses AI to craft magical, personalized tales based on user engagement and optional prompts within the app. Each visit or interaction triggers a new 'magic item'—a virtual collectible that enriches the story with fresh narrative elements.

This blend of advanced algorithms, generative visuals, and user input creates an immersive, playful experience embedded directly within the McDonald’s app. It offers families a novel way to connect with the brand through their everyday adventures.

Collaboration Drives Innovation

The technical development was led by TBWA’s innovation unit NEXT in Helsinki. The AI system combines large language models with custom image generators to produce personalized stories automatically during each family visit.

Umberto Onza, design director at TBWA\Helsinki, highlighted the complexity: “Multiple technical elements had to work seamlessly together to ensure the system runs smoothly and delivers consistent, high-quality stories.”

Given the project’s scope, legal compliance and creative direction were integrated from the start to build a dependable platform that operates autonomously.

What Creatives Can Learn from Magic Stories

  • Personalization fuels engagement: Making customers the heroes of their own stories creates emotional ties that go beyond transactions.
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration matters: Creative, technical, and legal teams working together early ensures a smooth product launch and ongoing operation.
  • AI can enrich brand storytelling: Combining large language models with visual generation offers fresh ways to connect and entertain audiences.

For creatives exploring AI in content and brand experience, Magic Stories is a clear example of how technology and narrative can blend to build lasting loyalty.
