First lady Melania Trump visited western North Carolina on Tuesday, nearly two years after Hurricane Helene devastated the region, praising community resilience while spotlighting artificial intelligence and STEM education as central to the area's recovery. "North Carolina is the definition of resilience," Trump told students and school employees. "Toughness in times of adversity is ingrained in the Tar Heel State's character." Ashe County Schools Superintendent Eisa Cox echoed that memory, saying the storm's aftermath revealed the strength of local ties. "When I think back to those days, what I remember most is not the devastation; it is the people," Cox said. "It was neighbor helping neighbor right here in this community." Trump also recognized Assistant Principal Cynthia Harless, who volunteered at the school's distribution center for four weeks after floodwaters left her own family displaced.
Bringing AI into the classroom
Trump has made AI education a signature focus of her second term, launching the Presidential AI Challenge to encourage students and teachers nationwide to explore uses of the technology. During Tuesday's visit, she highlighted North Carolina second-grade teacher Carrie Robledo, a 2026 national champion in the competition. Robledo developed "AI Insect Detectives," a project that introduces young children to artificial intelligence through science and the natural world.
"Think about that remarkable journey: from floodwaters to the cutting edge of artificial intelligence," Trump said. "Ms. Robledo built something that no hurricane can destroy, and no flood can wash away: knowledge."
