Meta Acquires Robotics AI Startup to Accelerate Humanoid Development
Meta has completed its acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence, a startup building AI models for robots. The deal, announced May 1, is part of Meta's push to develop humanoid robots, though financial terms were not disclosed.
Assured Robot Intelligence focuses on AI that enables robots to understand, predict, and adapt to human behavior in complex environments. The startup's co-founders, Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang, will join Meta Superintelligence Labs and work with Meta Robotics Studio, a team established last year to develop underlying humanoid technology.
Who's Building What
Pinto previously co-founded Fauna Robotics before leaving in 2025. Amazon acquired Fauna in March to advance its own humanoid robot efforts. Wang was a researcher at Nvidia.
The robotics race extends beyond Meta. Tesla showcased Optimus Gen 3 in Shanghai in early 2026, using the same AI5 inference chips found in its vehicles. A final reveal is planned for late 2026.
Google announced a partnership with Agile Robots SE in March to deploy reasoning-capable robots in industrial manufacturing.
