Meta launches business agent for WhatsApp to automate customer interactions in India

Meta has unveiled Meta Business Agent for WhatsApp, an AI-powered assistant that lets businesses automate customer interactions around the clock. Announced at the company's annual Business Summit in Mumbai, the tool is designed to handle queries, recommend products, book appointments, and qualify leads - with human agents stepping in only when needed. For customer support teams, the launch signals a practical shift toward AI managing routine conversations at scale.

How the AI assistant works

The assistant can answer business-specific questions, pull product suggestions from a company's catalogue, schedule appointments, and qualify incoming leads. Business owners control when a conversation transfers from the AI to a human representative. Meta said the tool is built to deliver personalised customer experiences without requiring large support teams.

Beyond direct customer contact, the assistant analyses conversations to surface operational insights and summaries of missed interactions. This lets teams stay on top of daily operations and focus on growth, Meta said. The assistant's ability to manage end-to-end interactions reflects a wider move toward AI for Customer Support that handles routine work autonomously.

Enterprise platform for deeper customization

Alongside the core assistant, Meta launched the Meta Business Agent Platform for larger enterprises. This gives companies the ability to build and deploy their own AI agents, integrated with existing systems like Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee. Working with the WhatsApp Business Platform, it offers enterprise-grade scalability, controls, and measurement. The intention is to fit into current workflows, letting AI agents work alongside support teams rather than replacing them.

The enterprise platform illustrates how AI Agents & Automation are being woven into existing business software, allowing companies to keep their familiar tools while adding AI capabilities.

India's conversational commerce push

"India has emerged as one of the most dynamic markets for conversational business globally, with messaging becoming the preferred way for people and businesses to connect. As AI becomes more central to the transformation of the way businesses operate, Meta Business Agent represents the next step in that journey, helping businesses harness AI to strengthen customer relationships, improve efficiency, and unlock growth," said Arun Srinivas, managing director and country head, Meta India.

Messaging increasingly dominates how consumers interact with brands in India, making the country one of Meta's most important markets for business messaging. The launch positions WhatsApp to move beyond a messaging app and function as a commerce platform.

Why this matters for customer support

For customer support professionals, Meta Business Agent signals a shift toward AI absorbing tier-1 inquiries. Support teams can expect to spend less time on repetitive tasks like appointment booking and product questions, and more on complex issues that require human judgment. The tool's conversation analysis also gives managers a clearer view of customer needs and team performance. Rather than replacing staff, the assistant reallocates human effort - handling the predictable so that people handle the exceptional.
