MGen Partners with IBM to Integrate AI in Power Plant Operations

Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen), led by the Pangilinan group, has partnered with IBM to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) into its power generation management. This collaboration centers on adopting the IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS), an advanced asset lifecycle management platform designed to improve operational efficiency and reliability.

The IBM MAS solution enables automation of plant inspections by delivering both real-time and historical data. This capability supports more effective monitoring, maintenance, and reliability planning across MGen's portfolio of power plants.

Driving Efficiency and Sustainability in Energy Operations

Emmanuel Rubio, MGen's president and CEO, emphasized that innovation at MGen focuses on addressing the energy trilemma: providing energy that is reliable, affordable, and sustainable. He highlighted that digital transformation is key to future-proofing operations, accelerating decarbonization efforts, and creating an energy system that benefits both people and the environment.

MGen operates a diverse mix of power assets, including solar, thermal, and liquefied natural gas plants. These facilities supply baseload, intermediate, peak load, and ancillary services to the national grid, requiring precise operational oversight.

Operational Impacts and Strategic Goals

  • Reliability: Automated inspections and data-driven maintenance reduce downtime and improve plant availability.
  • Cost-efficiency: Streamlined processes cut operational costs while maintaining high service quality.
  • Sustainability: Enhanced monitoring supports decarbonization and the transition to cleaner energy sources.

Kenny Ryan Martinez, MGen’s vice president and IT head, noted that the collaboration marks a significant step toward a low-carbon future for the Philippines. He underlined that resilience, excellence, and innovation remain core to delivering cost-competitive and sustainable energy.

IBM’s Role and Technology Advantage

IBM Philippines’ country software leader, Christine Llanto-Ravelo, explained that MAS will help MGen meet its commitment to delivering a reliable, sustainable power supply. As a global provider of hybrid cloud and AI solutions, IBM supports clients in more than 175 countries with tools that improve data-driven decision-making.

This partnership brings AI-powered asset management to the forefront of power generation operations, aligning with industry trends toward smarter, more efficient energy infrastructure.
