Microsoft signed an agreement with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) last week, establishing a new Privacy & Safety Standard for Schools that governs how the company's education products handle student and educator data. The deal-the first time a major technology company and one of America's largest teachers' unions have jointly defined trusted AI requirements-limits data usage, requires human oversight for consequential decisions, and provides transparency for families.

The agreement anchors a broader set of five principles Microsoft published this week for AI in education. The principles cover safety and privacy by design, educator control, learning-centered AI design, institutional system strengthening, and AI skills preparation. Justin Spelhaug, President of Microsoft Elevate, said the company built the Standard to be shared. "We invite others across our industry to meet this bar with us," Spelhaug said.

A privacy standard with teeth

The Privacy & Safety Standard for Schools applies to Microsoft Education products and affirms that schools retain ownership of the knowledge and ideas they create. It also holds Microsoft accountable when it falls short. The company framed the agreement as a direct response to questions educators and parents are asking about whether AI tools are safe and whether students are still doing the thinking.

"We believe institutions should never have to choose between innovation and trust," Spelhaug said. Security, privacy, and transparency are now baseline requirements in Microsoft's education approach, not optional add-ons.

Educators in control, not sidelined

The second principle puts educators at the center of AI use. Microsoft's position is that AI should augment professional judgment, not replace it. The company pointed to Teach in Microsoft 365 Copilot, an education-first AI experience built around instructional workflows. It helps teachers adapt materials for different learners and build standards-aligned lessons. The goal, Spelhaug said, is "to lift the administrative burden that gets in the way."

Early results are measurable. Brisbane Catholic Education reported a 275% increase in learner agency among at-risk cohorts after deploying Microsoft 365 Copilot. Miami Dade College saw a 15% increase in student pass rates and a 12% drop in course dropout rates. Through the Education Insiders Program, educators participate in private product previews and feedback sessions that shape tools before release. Over 17 million people completed an AI skills credential in the past year through Microsoft Elevate for Educators, which offers AI Learning Path for Teachers resources and practical classroom materials.

Protecting the struggle that builds learning

Microsoft's third principle addresses cognitive offloading-the risk that AI creates the appearance of learning without the cognitive work that makes it durable. "Some of the most important learning happens when students are stuck," Spelhaug said. "Difficulty builds understanding that lasts. AI that removes that struggle can quietly move the thinking from the learner to the machine."

The company's AI experiences are age-appropriate by design. Copilot Chat is default-off for K-12 students, with administrator controls for age-based enablement as learners progress. For younger students, Minecraft Education builds foundational AI literacy. The Study and Learn Agent uses scaffolded questions and interactive practice to help learners work through concepts without doing the work for them. Microsoft 365 Copilot introduces enterprise-grade tools for older learners.

Many commonly used AI tools were not designed for education and prioritize speed over understanding. Institutions have responded by limiting or blocking access entirely, even as students continue using AI on their own. Microsoft's bet is that purpose-built learning experiences will close the trust gap.
