MIT is considering a broad overhaul of its educational system in response to AI models that can now complete most undergraduate assignments, according to a new report from the university's ad hoc AI committee. The report, co-chaired by professors Eric Klopfer and Samuel Madden, describes the "profound challenges" AI is already causing across campus.
The committee's most striking conclusion: AI "can produce credible solutions and provide reasonable responses to almost any written assignment in our undergraduate curriculum, including essays, math and science problems, proofs, and coding assignments."
For many educators, the report simply confirms what has been clear for years. AI-enabled cheating has pushed professors to rethink how they teach, with some students using AI to complete entire online courses.
Classrooms adapt to AI
Some of the solutions feel old-fashioned. Many professors are switching to oral exams and hand-written essays. Others are leaning on in-class discussions, requiring students to keep notes on their reading, or assigning more hands-on projects.
The report also flags broader social effects. "Because many students are choosing or feel pressure to shift to learning and problem-solving with AI, in less than three years these technologies have driven major shifts in campus culture, including decreased attendance at office hours, reduced participation in online discussions, and, as we heard anecdotally, a drop in in-person study groups in dorms, libraries, and other study spaces."
Some institutions are taking a harder line. The University of Chicago Law School now bans phones and laptops in freshman-level classes. Princeton University dropped its century-old Honor Code tradition, which allowed unsupervised exams, after an AI cheating scandal.
