Finance Professionals Report Widening AI Skills Gap
Three-quarters of finance professionals say their academic training failed to prepare them for the AI skills their jobs now demand, according to a survey from the CQF Institute, a London-based quantitative finance membership organization.
The gap is accelerating. Seventy-six percent of respondents said the mismatch between required skills and available talent has grown over the past three years. Eighty-eight percent of quantitative finance professionals worldwide acknowledge the skills gap exists across their industry.
Financial institutions are struggling to find enough people who combine mathematical, computational, and AI expertise. More than half of survey respondents said it is difficult to hire quantitative professionals with this skill mix.
The Scope of the Problem
Fifty-eight percent of respondents said AI tools have expanded their job responsibilities over the past two years. Seventy-five percent reported their current roles require capabilities they were never taught in college.
Dr. Randeep Gug, managing director of the CQF Institute, said in a statement: "AI is raising the technical bar across quant finance. Financial institutions are discovering that deploying advanced AI systems requires far more professionals with strong quantitative and computational foundations than the market currently produces."
Nearly 74% of respondents predict AI will drive a major or complete transformation of quantitative roles within the next five years.
How Professionals Are Responding
Many finance professionals are filling the gap themselves. Seventy-five percent rely on self-directed learning or on-the-job experience to develop skills their formal education did not provide.
The CQF Institute surveyed 135 quantitative finance professionals globally for its "Careers in Quantitative Finance Survey."
Finance professionals looking to close their own skills gap can explore AI for Finance resources or the AI Learning Path for Data Scientists, which addresses the quantitative foundations the survey identifies as critical.
