The B.S. in Operations and Systems Management at MSOE has become the first program redesigned to meet full A²I² certification, embedding applied AI into every course rather than relying on standalone AI literacy classes. The move signals how business schools are responding to employer demand for graduates who can apply AI within a management context from day one.
The Rader School of Business, with leadership from Dr. David Rollins, assistant professor, assessed every class in the operations and systems management program and added new elements to meet the certification standard.
How the A²I² framework works
The A²I² framework rests on four pillars: foundational knowledge, practical application, critical evaluation and social responsibility. Programs earn certification by showing meaningful integration of these elements through updated outcomes, coursework and projects. The goal is to balance technical skills with social and ethical awareness, not just train students to use tools.
Dr. Ruth Barratt, Rader School of Business department chair and professor, said the approach reflects what employers actually need. "New graduates need to know more than how to code-they need to know how they can quickly make an impact on their organizations, they need business acumen and they need to be confident in tackling real world problems," she said. "This program provides that foundation in a way that other universities are not."
Other certified programs and pathways
Additional programs with full A²I² certification include the B.S. in Biomedical Engineering (general and AI pathways) and the B.S. in User Experience. The certification tag now appears in program descriptions in the current MSOE Academic Catalog.
Students can also pair their major with a Foundations of Applied AI Minor, which includes an applied AI mini capstone project. A Foundations of Applied AI Certificate and an Applied AI for Biomedical Applications Certificate are open to students from all majors. The Rader School of Business is working on additional course and program updates to meet certification.
