The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will deploy an AI-powered dashcam monitoring system across roughly 40,000 kilometres of the national highway network. The initiative uses machine learning to feed high-resolution imagery directly into routine operations, giving maintenance teams near-real-time defect detection and sharper planning data.

How the dashcam monitoring system works

Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) will carry specialized dashboard cameras to conduct weekly surveys across all stretches. The cameras capture high-resolution stills and video, which AI algorithms then scan to flag damaged or faded lane markings, crash barriers, and non-functional streetlights instantly. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said the method will also cover road furniture assessments.

Centralized monitoring and analytics

Five geographic zones have been created to keep data monitoring systematic. A dedicated IT platform will house modules for data management, AI analytics, and interactive visualization dashboards. The platform allows side-by-side comparisons of road conditions over time, so NHAI can precisely track maintenance progress and schedule repairs faster.
