Nigerian Air Force Advances Operations with Artificial Intelligence and Space Technology

The Nigerian Air Force is integrating AI and space technology to boost operational efficiency and national security. Over 70 personnel trained to enhance space capabilities and intelligence gathering.

Nigerian Air Force Advances with Artificial Intelligence and Space Technology

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a decisive step to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and space technology into its operations. This move reflects a commitment to move beyond outdated systems and fully adopt digital-age warfare capabilities.

Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), shared that over 70 NAF personnel have received training in critical space-related fields, both domestically and internationally. This training supports the force’s goal to enhance operational efficiency through advanced technology.

Strategic Focus on Space Science and Technology

Speaking at an International Colloquium held in Abuja, organized jointly with the Bradford AI Space Centre to mark the NAF’s 61st anniversary, the CAS highlighted Nigeria’s progress in space science since the launch of its 25-year Space Roadmap in 2005.

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, the country has renewed its space ambitions. Key initiatives include a presidential approval for a multi-billion naira take-off fund for the National Space Research and Development Agency and authorization for launching four additional satellites. These steps underline Nigeria’s commitment to space innovation.

According to the CAS, these efforts position space technology as a fundamental part of Nigeria’s national agenda. They are expected to drive economic diversification, enhance intelligence gathering, and strengthen national resilience amid increasing global challenges.

Enhancing NAF Operations through AI and Space Technology

The conference theme, “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Effective Utilization of Space Science Technology for Enhanced NAF Operations,” reflects the force’s focus on integrating these technologies to improve performance.

Retired Air Vice Marshal Charles Otegbade, who presented the lead paper at the event, praised the forum for critically examining how AI and space technology advancements contribute to achieving NAF’s mandate.

Earlier, Air Vice Marshal S K Usman, Chief of Communications Information Systems at NAF Headquarters, emphasized that the fusion of AI and space technology is redefining operational possibilities. The colloquium aimed to explore how AI-driven solutions could boost space-based capabilities.
