Nokia has launched Cognitive Operations, a platform that combines mission-critical communications, edge computing, and operational AI into a single system for industries where field failures carry severe consequences. The platform targets mining, construction, public safety, and defense organizations, and it is available now with deployment options ranging from on-premises hardware to the Microsoft Azure Marketplace.
Cognitive Operations gives operational teams a live 3D digital twin of their sites, AI-agentic assistance, real-time video analytics, predictive maintenance, and autonomous safety monitoring. The system creates what Nokia calls a dynamic hybrid wireless network fabric with no single point of access failure, designed to keep communications running in environments where traditional networks would collapse.
How the edge hardware works
At the core of the platform sits the Cognitive Edge Node (CEN), a ruggedized network and compute appliance built for vehicles and remote locations. The CEN embeds GPU-accelerated computing directly on-device, which means AI inference happens in the field rather than relying on a distant cloud connection. Nokia has integrated Rajant's InstaMesh kinetic mesh networking technology into the CEN, allowing nodes to self-organize into a distributed network that routes around failures automatically.

Three applications for different operational demands
Nokia is launching Cognitive Operations with three industry-specific applications. For mining, the platform connects mine sites through the Cognitive Edge Node and delivers the full AI toolset either on-premises or via the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. Nokia claims operators can deploy the cloud version in days rather than months.
For emergency services, the platform introduces a "Vehicle as a Node" concept. Police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances equipped with the Cognitive Edge become autonomous intelligence nodes at an incident scene. The vehicles self-organize into a distributed field network, sharing a live 3D situational picture, processing video locally, and maintaining communications across 5G, Wi-Fi, and satellite links.
For defense operations, the platform extends to the tactical edge. Vehicles, units, and forward assets form secure, self-organizing nodes in a distributed network. Forces share a unified situational picture and run on-device AI for sensor fusion, video analytics, and threat detection. Communications stay assured across 5G, tactical radio, and satellite even in contested environments.
