Nokia has launched Cognitive Operations (CO), a dedicated platform that combines edge computing, mission-critical communications, and agentic AI tools for industries including mining, public safety, and defense. The move extends the Finnish vendor's industrial footprint into markets where operational downtime carries serious financial or human stakes.

What's inside the platform

The CO platform centers on the Cognitive Edge Node (CEN), a rugged device with embedded GPU-accelerated computing that processes data on-site rather than relying solely on cloud connections. It packages agentic assistance, a live 3D digital twin of operations, and real-time video analytics to give operational teams better visibility into their sites and assets.

Nokia described the underlying connectivity as a "dynamic hybrid wireless network fabric" with no single point of access failure. The design targets the toughest physical environments where a dropped connection isn't an inconvenience but a safety or mission risk.

Deployment options split two ways: on-premises using local IT infrastructure or hosted through the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. Each market-specific version adapts to its context. The emergency services offering, for instance, uses a vehicle-as-a-node concept where a response vehicle carrying the CEN becomes a distributed field intelligence network at an incident scene.

The partnership layer

Wireless edge network vendor Rajant contributed its InstaMesh technology directly into the Cognitive Edge Node. InstaMesh dynamically optimizes performance as network characteristics shift, which matters when a mining operation or battlefield deployment changes topology by the minute.

"Our Cognitive Operations solution extends AI directly into the field, enabling real-time intelligence where physical operations happen," said Lelio Di Martino, GM of Cognitive Operations at Nokia. "Together with our partners Microsoft Azure and Rajant, we are building a future-ready system for autonomous mission-critical infrastructure, with public safety agencies, defense forces, and mining/construction companies leading the way."

Nokia's deepening industrial and defense push

Nokia has been laying groundwork in these sectors for years. Last September it worked with Boldyn Networks to deploy a private 5G network in a copper mine turned equipment testbed in Pyhรคjรคrvi, Finland. It also ran 5G standalone network tests with Deutsche Bahn. The CO platform formalizes those threads into a single, repeatable product.

The defense angle is newer. Nokia stood up a dedicated defense-grade solutions unit in 2025 and appointed Ari Kynaslahti as its first defense head. The company already holds a sizable defense portfolio, rooted in some of the earliest radio systems it built for the Finnish military alongside commercial customers. CO's defense positioning signals intent to grow that business further.

For operations managers in mining, emergency response, or defense, the CO platform represents a shift toward running AI inference directly at the edge rather than waiting on cloud round-trips. The vehicle-as-a-node concept and the no-single-point-of-failure fabric address a persistent field problem: connectivity that disappears when you need it most.
