NVIDIA is joining the U.S. National Science Foundation's State and Regional AI Infrastructure Hubs program, an initiative launching today that gives colleges and universities across the country shared access to advanced computing, data, and software for AI research and education. The program is designed to help institutions prepare students for the AI economy and accelerate scientific discovery through partnerships that pool resources across states and regions.
The program supports consortia of schools that can focus on local priorities, achieve economies of scale, and bring computing resources to institutions that might otherwise lack access. Consortia can choose on-premises infrastructure, cloud computing, or a combination of both.
The project builds on a 2020 public-private partnership between NVIDIA, NVIDIA cofounder Chris Malachowsky, and the University of Florida. That initiative turned UF into the country's first AI-focused university and now provides AI compute access to all Florida public schools. UF has since grown to more than 300 AI-focused faculty and embedded AI education across all 16 colleges. Since 2017, UF faculty and units have received more than $511 million in AI research awards, with much of that work tied to AI for Science & Research.
Workforce development and training
NVIDIA said infrastructure alone is not enough. The company is working with the NSF to pair computing resources with clear learning pathways: degree programs, short-form certificates, and stackable credentials. These pathways help students, faculty, and working adults gain applied skills in fields like healthcare, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and cybersecurity.
NVIDIA provides training resources, educator enablement, and technical guidance to help institutions build programs that move learners from basic literacy to hands-on capability. The company said its goal is to help schools create repeatable, openly available programs that prepare students to use AI systems and data workflows responsibly. These AI for Education pathways give learners practical experience while helping institutions connect training to employer needs and local economic priorities.
Connecting research to regional growth
For state and local leaders, the hubs offer a way to link research infrastructure with workforce development and economic strategy. Institutions can cultivate talent for local industries, support research connected to regional markets, and build stronger relationships among universities, community colleges, employers, and government.
The NSF program builds on the earlier National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource pilot, where NVIDIA partnered with university teams across the country to turn computing resources into usable scientific capacity. NVIDIA said those partnerships also created educational opportunities that gave students real-world skills for the AI economy.
