Ocado deploys AI-driven software to manage warehouse operations

Ocado Intelligent Automation is rolling out Ocado IQ, a cloud-based fulfillment execution platform that coordinates picking, movement, and task priorities across warehouse operations. The system manages activity from inbound through outbound, directing work across the Ocado Mobile Robot System, including Chuck and Porter autonomous mobile robots.

The software introduces three capabilities designed to increase picking productivity while reducing labor needs. Two concurrent pick modes allow different aisles to run separate picking strategies simultaneously, rather than locking the entire warehouse into a single approach.

A Smart Bypass function improves throughput by optimizing robot and worker movement patterns. AI logic continuously monitors orders and available labor, then adjusts work assignments in real time as conditions change.

"Most software systems lock you into a single pick mode for every aisle in your warehouse," said Leah Holding, president of Ocado Solutions North America. "What elevates Ocado IQ is its ability to run multiple pick strategies at once."

The platform consolidates task coordination, workforce management, and automation control into one interface. Operations teams can monitor and adjust warehouse activity from a central point rather than managing separate systems for robots, people, and fulfillment tasks.

For operations professionals implementing or evaluating AI-driven automation systems, understanding how these tools coordinate labor and machinery is essential. AI Learning Path for Operations Managers covers decision-making frameworks for workflow optimization and automation deployment.
