OpenAI Launches First Overseas Academy in India to Boost AI Learning

OpenAI has partnered with the Indian government's IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to launch OpenAI Academy India. This marks OpenAI's first international rollout of its education platform, aiming to expand AI learning opportunities across the country.

Strategic Partnership Focused on India’s Tech Growth

Announced on June 6, 2025, the initiative targets India’s expanding developer community, solid digital infrastructure, and vibrant startup ecosystem. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between OpenAI and IndiaAI outlines collaboration on digital skilling, government training, and AI community development.

OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, noted India’s fast adoption of AI and its position as home to the second-largest base of ChatGPT users worldwide. He emphasized the goal of helping people gain practical AI skills to improve their work and communities.

Multi-Language Platform to Reach Diverse Learners

The OpenAI Academy will offer educational content through both its own platform and the IndiaAI FutureSkills portal. Materials will be available in English, Hindi, and four additional regional languages. The program includes capacity-building for government officials via the iGOT Karmayogi platform, along with AI literacy initiatives for students, developers, teachers, civil servants, and small business owners.

Comprehensive Support: Funding, Training, and Events

OpenAI plans to host webinars and workshops in six Indian cities. It will also award up to US$100,000 in API credits to 50 startups and fellows approved by IndiaAI. Hackathons across seven states aim to engage 25,000 students, and the training of one million teachers in generative AI technologies is a key target.

IndiaAI CEO Abhishek Singh highlighted the significance of accessible computing resources, sharing that around 34,000 GPUs are now available to Indian developers at competitive rates. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called the academy a major step in ensuring innovation benefits all citizens, reinforcing the mission to enable community learning and accelerate locally relevant AI solutions.
