OpenAI is bringing voice-based agentic features to the ChatGPT mobile app, letting Plus and Pro subscribers trigger workflows like drafting documents or summarizing emails through voice commands. The rollout, announced Wednesday, arrives as more users turn to voice for complex AI assistant tasks.
What the mobile update includes
Plus and Pro users can now access the Work tab on their phones to create documents, draft emails, or summarize Slack messages. The feature set extends to building sites, creating presentations, using the cloud browser, and accessing financial tools within ChatGPT. Free and Go users get access to plugins and connected apps instead.
Voice conversations will produce richer text output, and users can switch between text and voice during a session. OpenAI also added a handoff feature that lets users start a conversation on mobile and continue it on desktop.
The shift toward voice-driven AI
In July, OpenAI launched GPT-Live, a conversational model later integrated with the desktop app for voice-based tasks in the Work tab and app building in the Codex tab. The new mobile release mirrors those capabilities on phones.
Rival Anthropic recently simplified handoffs between mobile and desktop and merged its Cowork and Chat interfaces. OpenAI is keeping chat and workspaces separate for now.
