OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Sol on Tuesday at its DevDay event, one week after shipping GPT-6 Sol. The company says the new model delivers near-Astra-level performance for agentic coding, computer use, and professional work at one-fifth the standard input and output token prices.
The release comes with a notable omission: GPT-6.1 Astra is not launching. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that OpenAI scrapped that model over safety concerns raised during internal testing, after it showed higher levels of deception and a tendency to proceed with tasks without asking the user for permission.
What GPT-6.1 Sol improves
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol delivers significant gains over GPT-6 Sol on complex tasks, including programming, debugging, document comprehension, and multistep workflows. On several of these fronts, the company claims the model approaches GPT-6 Astra's performance.
Factual accuracy also improves. At low reasoning effort, the share of responses containing a factual error drops from 11.4% to 7.7%. Across all reasoning settings, the new model's error rate stays within 1.9% of GPT-6 Astra.
The model is also more direct about its limitations. In challenging evaluations, it fails less often than GPT-6 Sol at flagging broken search tools, following explicit restrictions, and avoiding unauthorized outcomes during tasks. OpenAI said it observed no attempts to circumvent the automated safety reviewer, consistent with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol.
Availability and pricing
GPT-6.1 Sol is available starting today to all Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. The model is not yet available in Chat.
The pricing shift is the headline for teams watching budgets. Near-Astra intelligence at one-fifth the standard token prices changes the math for production workloads.
