OpenAI has launched the Learning Lab, a research network that will connect independent researchers, educators, students, and technology builders to study how artificial intelligence affects learning, teaching, and assessment. The move signals the company's intent to ground its education products in structured evidence as schools and systems move from small-scale pilots toward broader AI deployment.

The initiative spans disciplines including learning science, neuroscience, economics, sociology, and policy. OpenAI said the network will develop shared research questions and measures, examine what works across different settings, and feed emerging evidence into both education practice and its own product development.

What the research network aims to do

The Learning Lab has three stated goals. First, maintain a research network that continues across future model releases rather than producing a single snapshot. Second, share findings that contribute to the wider field and inform OpenAI's products. Third, give participants hands-on access to frontier AI and the company's technical teams.

OpenAI is direct about the limits of current knowledge. It describes existing research on AI's effectiveness for learning as "early and mixed" and points to a specific risk: students using AI to reach answers without doing the thinking needed to build understanding, judgment, and longer-term skills. "These challenges cannot be solved by a better model or a single study," the company said.

First convening and early research collaborations

OpenAI's Education team held the first Learning Lab meeting at its San Francisco headquarters last week. Researchers from the University of Tartu presented work connected to Estonia's national AI rollout and their study of how AI affects cognition over time. The university is also working with Stanford University and OpenAI on new approaches to measuring learning outcomes.

The meeting opened additional areas of collaboration, including research with Stanford's Accelerator for Learning, participation in the University of Oxford's AIEOU global community of practice, and work on challenges from Cornell University's National Tutoring Observatory. Students and teachers also contributed. Ethan Truong, a member of the inaugural ChatGPT Futures class, discussed his experience using AI and called for researchers to explore questions around student agency.

Professor Alfonso Gambardella and OpenAI Chief Economist Ronnie Chatterji presented findings from a Bocconi study. OpenAI summarized the results as showing that AI improved the quality of students' work, while critical-thinking training increased originality. The company did not release further details on study design, sample size, or methodology.

Research planned across years, not months

OpenAI is positioning the Learning Lab as an ongoing ecosystem rather than a time-limited project. "Good research takes time, and some of the questions we're asking may take years to answer well," the company said. It plans to combine longer-term causal research with shorter studies that can provide earlier signals.

The company also intends to make research tools, methodologies, and learnings more widely available. Existing resources include the OpenAI Research Index, Researcher Access Program, and a Learning Outcomes Measurement Suite. For educators building practical skills alongside the research, structured programs like the AI Learning Path for Teachers offer a parallel route to understanding how these tools function in real classrooms.

Why this matters for education professionals

The Learning Lab represents a shift from AI companies shipping education features and hoping they work, toward building an evidence base that can tell educators what actually helps students learn. For teachers and administrators, the network could produce shared measures and research findings that make it easier to evaluate AI tools across different school contexts. The emphasis on studying what happens when students bypass thinking - and what critical-thinking instruction does to counteract that - speaks directly to a concern many teachers have raised since ChatGPT arrived in classrooms. The research will take years, but the questions are the right ones.
