Otter.ai names Alex Gay chief marketing officer

Otter.ai has named Alex Gay as its first Chief Marketing Officer, the company announced today. Gay joins the AI notetaker at a moment of rapid growth: over 40 million professionals now use the platform, and Otter is evolving from meeting transcription software into a full conversational knowledge engine for enterprise customers.

Gay will oversee global marketing strategy across brand, product marketing, demand generation, and communications. His appointment signals Otter's push to sharpen its message as it competes in a market where companies are racing to capture and activate knowledge from conversations.

Who Alex Gay is

Gay brings more than two decades of marketing leadership at high-growth technology companies. He most recently served as Vice President of Product and Corporate Marketing at Superhuman, formerly known as Grammarly, where he led marketing strategy during the company's rebrand and expansion into agentic AI products. Before that, he held senior product marketing roles at Adobe.

He holds an MBA in Competitive Strategy and Marketing Strategy from Edinburgh Business School.

What Gay says about the role

"Voice is one of the richest, most underutilized sources of knowledge inside every organization," said Gay. "As AI accelerates the pace of business, unlocking that voice data gives teams access to the most up-to-date decisions, plans, and insights. I'm looking forward to building a brand and marketing organization that matches the ambition of the product."

Sam Liang, co-founder and CEO of Otter.ai, said, "Alex brings a rare combination of brand craft and product marketing rigour from his time at Superhuman/Grammarly and Adobe. As we scale Otter into the enterprise, Alex will help us tell that story clearly and build a marketing engine to match our growth."

Why this matters for marketing professionals

For marketers, the story is about how voice data is becoming a competitive asset. Organizations sit on millions of hours of meetings, strategy sessions, and client calls that are effectively lost to the company's knowledge base. Otter's push into a conversational knowledge engine means marketing teams can pull decisions, customer insights, and campaign approval trails directly from spoken conversations rather than relying on incomplete notes or delayed email trails. If your team has been relying on meeting summaries that are now falling through the cracks, this is worth watching.
