PCMag, Skift, Bloomberg and Axios top AI engine citation rankings as TechCrunch and legacy trade outlets lose ground, study finds

AI engines cite PCMag, Skift, STAT, and Bloomberg far more than prestige outlets like TechCrunch, per a study of 680 million citations across ChatGPT, Claude, and three other models. Most PR teams are pitching the wrong publications.

Trade Publications Are Being Reranked by AI Engines - and Your Media List Is Probably Wrong

PCMag, Skift, STAT, and Bloomberg are winning citations from major AI models while prestige outlets like TechCrunch lose ground, according to the first cross-industry study measuring which publications ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews actually cite.

The Trade Press AI Index 2026 analyzed more than 680 million individual citations across nine industries. Its finding: AI engines are quietly reranking the media landscape - not by audience size, ad spend, or Google rankings, but by their own retrieval systems.

The Winners and Losers

Specialist trade publications dominate. In technology, PCMag, TechRadar, and CIO.com appear in the top 10 across six to seven engines, out-citing higher-traffic general-news outlets. Skift owns travel. STAT leads healthcare. Bloomberg dominates financial services - one Bloomberg article generates more model recall than 50 mid-tier trade placements.

The prestige outlets are struggling. TechCrunch underperforms on citation. Beauty Inc is fading in LLM relevance. Bon AppΓ©tit loses ground to B2B trade titles like FoodDive.

The data shows a structural pattern: product evaluations out-cite editorial features. "Smart brevity" formats perform better. Recency matters - Perplexity rewards content refreshed within 12 months at 3.2 times the rate of older material.

Concentration Is Extreme

The top 15 domains capture 68% of all consolidated AI citation share. Wikipedia accounts for 47.9% of ChatGPT's top-10 cited sources. Reddit ranks as the No. 1 source across every major engine at near 40% frequency.

Within trade press, concentration is tighter still. Every industry analyzed shows just three to five publications capturing the majority of citations. The sixth, seventh, and eighth positions remain unclaimed and, according to the report, ownable within 9 to 12 months by any brand or publisher that structures content for retrieval.

The Engines Don't Behave Alike

Meta AI pulls 21.5% of its citations from media. Microsoft Copilot draws roughly 17%. ChatGPT relies on media for 15.4% of citations. Gemini is most diversified at just 5.7% from media sources.

Claude carries the longest historical citation tail of any engine, rewarding older, established sources. Perplexity explicitly rewards primary sources and recent content.

A single-engine strategy is structurally a losing strategy.

What This Means for PR Teams

Most PR programs are pitching the wrong media list. The most prestigious outlet and the most cited outlet are now two different publications.

The question has shifted. In 2014, PR teams asked which publication ranks on Google for their category. In 2026, the question is which publication ChatGPT cites when a buyer asks who matters in the category.

Citation share is now measurable, ownable, and moving. Very few brands have measured it yet.
