Pepper Releases AI Pricing Tool for Food Distributors, Reports 1-2% Margin Gains
Pepper, a technology platform for independent distributors, launched Price Management on Tuesday, giving sales reps real-time visibility into pricing gaps across their customer base. Early adopters report margin increases of one to two percent.
The tool works in two layers. Price Management surfaces margin opportunities by comparing what each rep charges different customers for the same items. The AI-powered Pricing Agent goes further, scanning a rep's entire book of business and recommending specific price increases.
The shift in rep behavior is measurable. Before using Price Management, 80-90% of price edits made by reps were decreases. Since adopting the tool, 60-70% of edits are increases.
Dave Penrith, VP of Street Sales at Flanagan Foodservice, said the reps using the tool most actively are seeing one to two percent margin improvement. "I see it becoming our main pricing tool," Penrith said. "The insights, the transparency-it's a game changer, without a doubt."
Built for Independent Distributors
Price Management differs from enterprise pricing software designed for national broadliners. It integrates directly into Pepper's existing platform, so distributors use the same data connections and ERP integrations they already have.
Existing Pepper customers can activate Price Management immediately without additional integration work. New customers go through a structured pilot that includes ERP setup, rep training, and defined success metrics.
Andrew Linville, Pepper's product manager for Price Management, said the core problem has never been awareness. "Every distributor sales leader knows their reps are leaving margin on the table," Linville said. "The problem has been visibility. Price Management makes the gap visible, while our Pricing Agent makes it actionable."
