Permira appoints former Microsoft developer division president Julia Liuson senior adviser for AI push

Permira has appointed Julia Liuson, the former President of Microsoft's Developer Division, as a Senior Adviser to its Technology team. The hire brings over three decades of software, cloud, and AI expertise to the investment firm as it pushes its portfolio companies to build AI-native operating models and scale AI-driven revenue.

Liuson will work from Menlo Park alongside Permira's Technology sector team and portfolio-company leadership. Her focus spans AI adoption, product development, and technology strategy. She will also contribute product and engineering insights to the firm's investment due diligence process when evaluating new technology companies.

A career at the center of developer tools

Liuson most recently led Microsoft's global developer business, overseeing programming languages, development tools, Azure developer services, and DevSecOps platforms, including GitHub. Earlier, she led Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code. Her tenure coincided with the rapid rise of generative AI and AI-assisted programming, giving her direct experience with how software teams integrate these tools into daily workflows.

"Few people understand that distinction as well as Julia, who led Microsoft's Developer Division and helped bring Copilot to millions of developers," said Michail Zekkos, Partner and Co-Head of Technology at Permira.

Portfolio-wide AI revenue acceleration

Permira said its technology portfolio companies now generate more than $800 million of AI-native annual recurring revenue, a figure growing at over 100% year over year. The firm treats AI not just as an investment theme but as an operating lever across its existing holdings. Liuson is expected to work directly with management teams on using AI to improve current products, create new offerings, and rethink software design and development processes.

"I'm thrilled to join Michail, Ryan and the team and look forward to working alongside them and their portfolio companies to accelerate AI adoption," Liuson said.

The appointment follows Permira's hiring of veteran technology investor Mike Hoffman as a Partner in June 2026, also based in Menlo Park. Both moves signal an expansion of the investment and operating expertise supporting the firm's technology strategy across its transatlantic private equity and credit platform.

Why this matters for product development

Liuson's appointment reflects a shift in how private equity firms approach value creation. Rather than treating AI as a standalone investment category, Permira is embedding senior product and engineering talent directly into its operating model. For product development leaders, the signal is clear: the firms funding and acquiring technology companies now expect AI to reshape not just product features but the entire development lifecycle. Resources on AI for Product Development and AI for Executives & Strategy can help teams build the skills to meet that expectation.
