Petual raises $20m to automate SOX compliance with agentic AI
Petual, an AI-powered audit and compliance platform, has secured $20 million in funding led by Andreessen Horowitz. First Round Capital, Cowboy Ventures, and Elad Gil also participated in the round.
The company plans to use the capital for product development and go-to-market activities. Petual's platform applies agentic AI to Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) procedures and internal audit work-processes the company describes as among the most resource-intensive and manual in public enterprises.
How the system works
Petual's AI automates evidence collection and work paper preparation at scale. The system processes both structured and unstructured inputs, including screenshots, PDF documents, and Excel files, then generates audit work papers.
The platform produces outputs with detailed reasoning linked to source documents, formatted to match external auditor templates. A built-in review and approval workflow keeps human oversight embedded in the audit process.
Early customers report efficiency improvements of 68-80% on existing SOX workflows. The company's early adopters include S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 companies across energy, software, infrastructure, manufacturing, and financial services.
What this means for product teams
For product development leaders, Petual's approach demonstrates how agentic AI can address specific, high-friction enterprise workflows. The company validated its product with large customers early-a signal that solving a concrete compliance problem attracts serious buyers.
Brian Roberts, general partner at a16z and a Petual board member, said: "It is not often that we see an early-stage company able to reach large enterprise customers so early in their journey. This is a testament to both how compelling the market opportunity is for Petual and the strength of the product they have built."
