Samsung is reconsidering its commitment to develop custom processors for OpenAI, with work on the project slowing significantly due to strategic differences between the partners. The South Korean tech giant has shifted focus toward other priorities, according to reports.

The collaboration began in 2024 after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman visited South Korea. Samsung started designing a specialized neural processing unit chip for inference based on ARM architecture. Development had progressed substantially until recently, when the final stages stalled.

The shift stems largely from Samsung's $65 billion investment in Anthropic, OpenAI's competitor. Anthropic, which develops the Claude language model, announced the funding round brought its valuation to $965 billion. Samsung confirmed it will supply memory, storage, and logic chips to the startup.

Samsung possesses capabilities that few investors can match. While competitors like Micron and SK Hynix focus solely on memory production, Samsung owns its own semiconductor division, Foundry, allowing it to manufacture complex graphics and logic chips independently. This advantage makes the Anthropic partnership particularly valuable.
