Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont on Monday called on the chief executives of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta to halt development of new AI models, arguing the companies have already lost control of systems that could produce "potentially cataclysmic results" for millions of people.

The letter cited previous statements from the companies that they would pause or delay releases if the technology became too risky to manage safely. Sanders argued that threshold has now been crossed.

"It is not too late to avoid disaster," wrote Sanders. "Stop building machines that humans cannot control."

A separate letter from a group of House Democrats asked House Speaker Mike Johnson to "immediately schedule" hearings with CEOs of the largest AI companies.

Why politicians are turning up the pressure

These actions signal that progressive Democrats aim to go beyond limits on data centers and electricity use - they want to regulate the development of the technology itself. Much of the current legislative focus has been on banning or limiting the spread of data centers, which some voters blame for rising energy bills and increased pollution.
