Sonova launches third hearing-aid platform with real-time AI

Sonova launched its third hearing-aid platform using real-time AI on Monday, an update the Swiss company is betting will shorten replacement cycles and bring in first-time users. The new Phonak EON platform arrives as Sonova works to reassure investors who met its medium-term growth targets with skepticism in March.

Sonova was the first company to release a hearing aid using real-time AI to separate speech from background noise in 2024. The new EON platform builds on that work with a smaller, lighter device and an upgraded AI that the company says makes speech twice as understandable while reducing listening effort.

What the new platform offers

Anders Rosengren, head of research and development at Sonova, said the advanced AI in EON is the core improvement. The device processes sound in real time, isolating a speaker's voice from surrounding noise - a feature that matters most in crowded restaurants, meetings, and other noisy environments where hearing aids traditionally struggle.

Oliver Lux, president of Sonova's EMEA and Latin America regions, said the company expects adoption to build quickly among both replacement and new customers. Sonova did not disclose pricing, but Lux said EON was designed to support the company's premium market positioning at launch.

The technology also connects to broader audio processing trends. The same kind of real-time speech separation that powers this hearing aid is increasingly used in customer service tools and speech-to-text systems, where pulling a clear voice out of background noise is the difference between a usable transcript and a garbled one.

Market timing and rollout

Monday's U.S. launch will be followed by Australia and key European markets including Germany, France, Italy, and Britain in mid-September, before a wider global rollout. Lux said Sonova continues to see positive market dynamics across its key markets, especially in Asia-Pacific and Latin America.

Under CEO Eric Bernard, who took office last September, Sonova has highlighted Asia-Pacific as a key growth region. The company wants to expand volumes there and strengthen its presence in faster-growing markets driven by aging populations.

Why this matters for customer support

The AI techniques behind EON - separating a target voice from ambient noise in real time - are the same ones showing up in customer service software. Support teams handling phone calls, voice notes, or recorded conversations face the same fundamental problem: audio quality degrades in real environments, and accuracy drops with it.

For professionals evaluating AI for customer support, Sonova's release is a useful benchmark. It shows what current-generation speech separation can handle on a small, battery-powered device. If that level of processing runs on a hearing aid, it is well within reach for cloud-based support tools - which changes what customers will expect from call transcription, voice assistants, and automated quality scoring.
