Korean Universities Add AI-Focused Poetry and Writing Courses

Soongsil University in Seoul is recruiting a visiting professor to teach poetry composition using generative AI, marking the first major course combining creative writing with the technology at the institution.

The department of creative writing will offer two courses later this year: "AI and Poetry Writing" and "Language Arts and Technology." The university is seeking candidates with experience on poetry journal editorial boards, major domestic poetry awards, and published research linking AI and literature from the past five years.

The move reflects broader expansion of AI education across South Korean universities. Ewha Womans University launched "AI+Major" courses across all disciplines starting in 2026, including a new class called "Korean Language Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence." Hankuk University of Foreign Studies established a Language and AI College in 2024 focused on natural language processing and speech recognition.

Faculty hiring patterns show the trend extending beyond flagship programs. Dankook University listed AI-humanities convergence experience as a preferred qualification for English humanities positions. Hanyang University specified computational linguistics and digital German studies in job postings for language departments. Kyung Hee University prioritized candidates in Korean literature who could demonstrate applied or interdisciplinary potential of classical texts.

Soongsil's earlier "AI Art and Media Narrative" course drew strong interest. About half the enrolled students came from other departments, signaling demand beyond creative writing majors.

Kim Tae-yong, dean of Soongsil's creative writing department, said the university is "preparing a new professor post and new courses with the idea of actively combining literature with AI, one of Soongsil University's strengths."
