South Korea blocks 64 foreign sites hosting AI deepfake porn

South Korea's media regulator has blocked access to 64 foreign websites that let users create pornographic deepfakes with artificial intelligence. The Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC) said the sites let people generate fake sexual images and videos using photos of real people, and that a significant number of the platforms support Korean.

The decision was made at a communications deliberation subcommittee meeting on Monday, according to the KMCC. The watchdog said it will monitor and respond to websites distributing AI-generated sexual content, warning that such material can cause irreversible damage to victims once it spreads online.

What the regulator found

The KMCC did not name the blocked sites or specify which countries hosted them. It said the platforms were identified as tools for creating sexually exploitative content, often using photos of identifiable individuals without their consent.

The move follows growing concern in South Korea over AI-generated deepfakes targeting women and public figures. The KMCC's action is part of a broader government effort to curb the distribution of synthetic sexual content.

Why this matters for PR and communications

For PR and communications professionals, the case is a reminder that AI-generated content carries real legal and reputational risk. Deepfakes can be used to damage brands, impersonate executives, or fabricate statements - and the tools to create them are widely accessible.

Communications teams should review their crisis protocols for handling AI-generated disinformation. That includes monitoring for fake images or videos of company leaders and preparing response templates before an incident occurs.

Professionals looking to strengthen their approach can find guidance in AI for PR & Communications resources, which cover how AI tools are changing media relations and reputation management. The KMCC said it will continue to track similar websites and take action against those that distribute AI-generated sexual content.
