South Korea partners with DeepMind on AI-driven science initiative

South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT signed a memorandum of understanding with Google DeepMind on Monday to support the country's "K-Moonshot" project, which targets major scientific and technological challenges across biotechnology, nuclear energy, and fusion research.

The partnership integrates DeepMind's AI capabilities into South Korean research programs, with Vice Prime Minister and Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon saying the collaboration is expected to accelerate research outcomes in life sciences and climate research.

What the partnership covers

The agreement includes joint research programs, researcher exchanges, and the launch of a national AI science research center next month. South Korean researchers will participate in internships at DeepMind, and Google plans to establish an AI campus in South Korea as a hub for the K-Moonshot initiative.

DeepMind Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis cited South Korea's existing strengths in semiconductors and robotics as reasons for the collaboration.

AI safety and governance focus

Both organizations committed to expanding cooperation on AI safety frameworks and model safeguards. South Korea's AI Safety Institute will work with DeepMind to develop evaluation methods and risk mitigation strategies.

Hassabis said South Korea's cybersecurity capabilities make it a valuable partner for addressing AI safety challenges. The collaboration will include joint research on safety protocols across the partnership's scientific work.

Broader context

The K-Moonshot Project, unveiled earlier this year, aims to address 12 major challenges across eight fields. The DeepMind partnership represents one component of South Korea's broader effort to position AI as a tool for scientific discovery rather than as a standalone technology sector.

Researchers working in scientific fields may benefit from AI for Science & Research training that covers laboratory optimization and research automation in practice.
