When Erin Defossé opened Stellaris International School in Nashville this year, he brought a specific idea with him: that artificial intelligence should change how young children learn. Defossé, who founded the bilingual Magellan International School in Austin in 2009, argues that the traditional teacher-led classroom is outdated and that student-led, inquiry-based learning will better prepare children for a workforce shaped by AI.
In June, roughly 20 education professionals met in Nashville to discuss these ideas. Selah Dowell, a sophomore at Harpeth Hall who attended the session, pushed back on one aspect of Defossé's vision: whether student-led classrooms would work in public schools serving economically diverse students.
A school built around inquiry, not instruction
Stellaris is a private pre-K3 through kindergarten school that teaches in Spanish. Its "inquiry-based" approach encourages children to ask questions and direct classroom discussion. Defossé believes this method lets curiosity grow and prepares students for adulthood in a world where AI handles routine tasks.
Defossé sees problems with the current education system: teachers talk for most of class time, and classrooms are designed to maintain order, which stifles curiosity. He also questions whether college education will remain relevant in 50 years, a view shared by thinkers who believe the current AI revolution might shrink the workforce rather than expand it.
The goal, he says, is to "achieve their life dreams and help society solve the challenges it is facing in the 21st century."
Different schools, different constraints
Stellaris and Magellan occupy a specific space: private, well-funded, and serving families who want a certain educational approach. Public schools operate under different conditions. Teachers in classrooms with the most low-achieving, minority, and poor students are more likely to be novices, according to widely documented patterns.
Newer teachers often need to establish control, and so they lecture. More experienced teachers, who tend to move to better-funded systems, can relax that control and let student-led discussion happen. The structure that makes student-led learning possible is a resource, and not all schools have it.
"When classrooms put the teacher in charge, every student is on the same page," Dowell writes. While this setup "may impede the curiosity or speed of learning for some students, I believe that it also allows for a larger number of students to succeed."
By contrast, if all classrooms became student-led, Dowell argues the knowledge gap would widen. Students at private schools would continue into schools with peers of similar backgrounds; public schools serving diverse needs would not see the same gains.
Classrooms will change - but not all at once
Dowell doesn't dispute the need for change. The tension is in how one applies it. The country has generations of educational infrastructure and teacher training built around the current model; wealthier private schools can take a different path because they have the money and support to do so.
"The challenging aspect will be accounting for all current economic and ideological backgrounds - and all who play a role in childhood education - when discussing possible changes," Dowell writes.
The workforce is already changing. AI is already rewriting job descriptions. The classroom challenge is how to prepare students for that reality when the starting points are so uneven.
Why this matters for education professionals
Education staff making decisions about curriculum and classroom structure should watch how Stellaris and Magellan design their programs in practice. But the larger question about adopting phased approaches - matching student-led learning models with teacher experience and school resources - is the one that will shape this transition.
Schools that are under-resourced should not chase a model their staff can't support. Training teachers to build local, low-lift versions of inquiry-based instruction - a few student-led discussions each week - will build more sustainable implementation than importing a private-school template wholesale.
