Study finds no global neobank leader in AI search as Nubank remains invisible in U.S.

The world's largest neobank, Nubank, commands roughly 55% of AI-generated visibility in Latin America and is virtually invisible when the same queries run on U.S. AI search tools. That finding, from the new Neobanks AI Visibility Index 2026 released by 5W AI Communications, reveals a deep rift between where brands invest for growth and how they actually appear in AI-driven answers. For public relations and communications teams, the benchmark signals that controlling the publisher ecosystem a given AI assistant draws from is rapidly overtaking traditional reach metrics as the deciding factor in brand discovery.

The index is the first public study to measure how often neobanks and digital-first banks are surfaced, cited, and recommended inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Researchers analyzed 31,500 prompts across the U.S., U.K., E.U. mainland, and Latin America between February and May 2026. Two independent reviewers scored outputs with an inter-rater reliability of Cohen's κ = 0.84.

Three markets, three different leaders

Nubank leads Latin America (~55%), Monzo leads the U.K. (~37%), Revolut leads the E.U. mainland (~40%), and Chime leads the U.S. at 34.7% of neobank citation share. Each leader falls at or below the discoverability floor in every market outside its home geography. Ronn Torossian, founder and chairman of 5W AI Communications, put it bluntly: "The largest neobank in the world is invisible to the largest AI-search market in the world. That is no longer a marketing problem. That is a category-definition problem."

Within the U.S., regional variation outpaced the differences between AI engines. Chime captures roughly 42% of Sun Belt citation share in states such as Texas, Florida, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, and Nevada, but drops to about 28% in the Northeast. SoFi shows the mirror pattern - 22% in the Northeast, 11% in the Sun Belt.

Four publishers supply most of the AI citations

Wikipedia, NerdWallet, Bankrate, and Reddit together account for 62% of cited sources when AI assistants answer U.S. neobank questions. Neobank-owned domains get less than 9% of citations. Reddit alone supplies roughly 15% across all AI tools, and that figure jumps to about 25% inside Perplexity. Matthew Caiola, North America CEO of 5W AI Communications, said: "Distribution beats deposits in AI search. Inside the neobank category specifically, community beats distribution. Reddit threads and Wikipedia entries do more work than most growth teams realize - and the publisher layer that feeds each AI engine is local, not global." For PR professionals looking to understand how Perplexity specifically surfaces sources, Perplexity AI Courses explore the engine's citation patterns in detail.

Safety prompts and stale exits create liability gaps

When prompts touch on FDIC coverage, deposit insurance, or parking large balances, three of the five AI engines classify Chime, Varo, and Current as "fintech" rather than "bank," routing the answer toward chartered incumbents. Gemini does so in 53% of safety-prompt runs. Meanwhile, N26's U.S. exit remains a persistent ghost: 41% of U.S. responses for N26 still describe the brand as "available in Europe," two years after it closed American accounts. In the E.U. mainland, N26 holds roughly 23% citation share - fifteen times its U.S. figure.

Why this matters for PR and communications

The index turns an abstract fear into data: AI-generated answers are not global. The sources that shape a brand's AI visibility in São Paulo do not transfer to Phoenix or Manchester. For communications teams, the work ahead is less about broad share-of-voice and more about understanding how specific publishers, forums, and community threads feed each engine's output in each market. Auditing a brand's AI presence by geography and by tool - and adjusting the owned-media gap where Reddit and Wikipedia currently dominate - is no longer a specialty. It is core to reputation management. Resources like AI for PR & Communications help practitioners build the skills to monitor and shape these fast-moving visibility landscapes.
