Sutter Health, the Sacramento-based not-for-profit system serving more than 3.5 million patients across Northern and Central California, has expanded its use of artificial intelligence across clinical care, radiology, and patient-facing tools in the past year. The expansion includes new partnerships with medical AI firms, a San Francisco innovation center, and a planned medical school built around emerging AI technologies.
Ashley Beecy, Sutter Health's inaugural Chief AI Officer, leads the system's Center for Applied AI. Her team builds internal tools, evaluates vendor partnerships, trains employees, and oversees AI governance to ensure the technology is deployed safely and monitored over time.
Where Sutter Health is deploying AI
In 2024, Sutter Health launched its San Francisco innovation center to work with AI and tech firms on digital health apps, remote monitoring programs, and other emerging technologies. The system also became the West Coast hub for clinical AI innovation for Aidoc, a medical technology company. The partnership, expanded in January, now includes radiology, where Aidoc's AI reviews and flags imaging scans and produces preliminary drafts of radiology reports.
In February, Sutter Health partnered with OpenEvidence, an AI platform and medical search engine, to help physicians find fast, evidence-based answers to clinical questions. This spring, the system announced plans to launch the Bay Area's first new medical school in over a century with Santa Clara University, with a curriculum centered on AI for Healthcare applications.
How clinicians and patients use the tools
For care teams, Sutter Health has rolled out chart summarization tools that condense digitized data from electronic health records, helping doctors prepare for visits. Ambient scribes document patient encounters so clinicians do not carry that administrative work home. For patients, the system launched a chatbot that connects to their electronic health record and answers questions about symptoms or provider selection within a protected data environment.
Beecy framed the goal in direct terms: "We're actually increasing the human touch and care by taking some of the administrative work off of our care teams." She added that clinicians can then focus on "the really complicated cases that require their human-level thinking and intelligence applied to clinical decision-making."
Building trust through governance
Sutter Health addresses skepticism around AI through evaluation before deployment, transparency about performance, employee onboarding, and ongoing monitoring. Beecy said the system reports back outcomes and safety measurements established in advance of any rollout.
The broader aim, she said, is to bring healthcare in line with other consumer industries. "There's no reason that healthcare shouldn't parallel these industries in creating the same level of experience," Beecy said, citing the technology that supports travel and shopping.
