AI Adoption in Swiss Finance Hits New Heights
Nearly half of financial institutions in Switzerland have integrated AI into their operations, with an additional 25% planning to adopt AI solutions soon. This insight comes from a survey of 400 financial firms conducted by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).
The survey shows that banks, insurance companies, fund managers, and other finance businesses are embracing AI at a significant pace. On average, each respondent currently uses five AI solutions, and nine more are in development.
Different Approaches by Company Size
Smaller firms tend to rely almost entirely on external AI providers. Larger institutions, however, combine in-house AI development with external services. This mixed approach helps them tailor AI applications to their specific needs while managing costs and expertise.
FINMA emphasizes that AI usage must comply with existing regulatory frameworks. Their principle is clear: "same business, same risks, same rules." This means that AI-driven processes in finance must meet the same standards as traditional methods.
Governance and Risk Management
About half of the surveyed institutions have formal AI strategies. Others manage AI within their existing governance structures. Swiss financial firms recognize the challenges AI brings, especially around data protection and data quality. Poor data can undermine AI effectiveness and introduce risks.
FINMA advises institutions to engage early if they plan to use AI in critical operations or for calculating regulatory parameters. This proactive approach helps ensure compliance and reduces operational risks.
Key Areas of AI Application
- Banks: AI is mainly used for compliance monitoring, conduct risk management, and process optimization.
- Insurers: Pricing and underwriting are the primary focus areas for AI deployment.
One notable risk is the outsourcing of critical AI functions to third-party providers. This creates dependencies that require careful oversight to maintain security and compliance.
