Sysco targets $500 million in AI savings across distribution operations

Sysco Corp. plans to cut at least $500 million in costs by fiscal 2029 by deploying artificial intelligence and automation across its global distribution network. The initiative targets core operational areas - truck routing, warehouse productivity, procurement, merchandising, and administrative work - where even small efficiency gains can yield substantial savings across 333 distribution centers and a fleet serving roughly 670,000 customer locations.

The Houston-based foodservice distributor announced the three-year program on Sept. 9. It builds on technology investments that Sysco expects will produce about $100 million in savings during fiscal 2027 alone. The company generated more than $84 billion in sales in fiscal 2026 and employs about 75,000 people.

"We finished fiscal 2026 with momentum, and that momentum has carried into the new year," Chairman and CEO Kevin Hourican said in a statement. Hourican said the program will change how Sysco manages everyday work in truck routing, merchandising, and sales.

Where the savings will come from

The supply chain sits at the center of the efficiency push. Sysco intends to modernize truck-routing software to reduce miles driven while improving how it uses trucks and drivers. In warehouses, the company is targeting better picking productivity - getting more orders selected per labor hour. These are high-volume, repeatable processes where algorithmic improvements compound quickly.

On the procurement and merchandising side, Sysco plans to automate strategic sourcing and reduce manual work involved in buying and managing products. The company also aims to simplify customer service workflows and back-office administrative processes, cutting indirect expenses that don't touch the product but still hit the bottom line.

The scale makes the math work. Sysco operates in 10 countries. A routing tweak that saves a few miles per truck, multiplied across the entire fleet, becomes meaningful. The same logic applies to warehouse picking, where seconds saved per order add up across thousands of employees.

Financial targets and management incentives

Sysco reaffirmed its fiscal 2027 sales forecast of about $90 billion, representing 6% to 7% growth and including a 53rd week. For fiscal 2028 and 2029, the company raised its annual sales growth expectation to 4% to 7%, up from a previous range of 4% to 6%. Adjusted earnings-per-share growth for those years is now pegged at 9% to 11%, compared with the earlier target of 6% to 8%.

Those forecasts cover existing operations and exclude the expected impact of the pending Jetro Restaurant Depot transaction, which Sysco anticipates closing by the third quarter of fiscal 2027.

Sysco also tied the cost-reduction program to leadership compensation. Meeting the savings targets has been added to the company's long-term equity performance program, putting financial weight behind the operational goals.

Why this matters for operations professionals

Sysco's program is a large-scale test of whether AI and automation can produce measurable operating savings in distribution. The company is not applying the technology to edge cases - it is targeting the most labor-intensive, everyday functions: routing trucks, picking orders, buying goods, and handling customer inquiries. The $100 million target for fiscal 2027 provides a near-term checkpoint. Operations leaders watching this rollout can track whether the savings materialize on schedule and which areas deliver the fastest returns.
