Two Stratford Students Selected for National K-12 AI Policy Summit
Anthony Darbilli and Bena Mejia Romero, high school students from Stratford Public Schools in Connecticut, have been selected to help shape national policy on how artificial intelligence should be used in K-12 schools. They will attend America's Youth AI Festival in Boston this July, where student delegates from across the country will draft a model national AI policy.
Stratford Superintendent of Schools Heather M. Borges will accompany the students to the festival, which runs July 17-19. The event is led by MIT RAISE, Day of AI, and the American Association of School Administrators (AASA).
Student Delegates Will Draft Policy
During the festival, 100 high school student leaders will convene as "Student AI Senators" at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute to debate and create a new national AI policy for K-12 public schools. Another 50 superintendents will participate in a separate leadership fellowship focused on ethical AI use and systems-level policy.
After the festival, AASA will distribute the resulting national AI policy to 10,000 school leaders across the U.S.
What Stratford Public Schools Is Already Doing
Borges said the district has "intentionally developed responsible AI practices and student-centered innovation work." The selection reflects the district's focus on preparing students for a future shaped by technology and critical thinking.
All travel, lodging, and meals for participating students and school leaders will be covered by program sponsors.

Day of AI, an independent nonprofit founded by MIT RAISE in 2021, has reached nearly 4 million students in more than 170 countries. Research from the organization shows that 97.6% of participants reported a stronger understanding of how AI works after using its curriculum.
