U of G Hosts Canada’s Largest Teaching With AI Conference
Artificial intelligence is transforming how educators teach and how students learn. This shift raises key questions: How should teaching and assessment adapt now and in the future? What opportunities does AI offer to rethink education?
The University of Guelph’s Office of Teaching and Learning is addressing these questions by hosting Canada’s biggest teaching with AI conference. This fully virtual event runs from June 9 to 13 and features nearly 60 speakers from 16 institutions worldwide.
The conference creates a space for educators, administrators, and students to share experiences and concerns as AI changes the education landscape.
Addressing Concerns and Creating Future-Ready Classrooms
Many worry that generative AI (GenAI) might weaken students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This conference invites educators to discuss how to maintain strong pedagogy while integrating AI tools.
The goal is to foster knowledge exchange across colleges and universities and equip educators with practical strategies for adapting teaching and assessment policies.
“The future of AI in education isn’t just about technology – it’s about people,” says Shehroze Saharan, educational technology developer at U of G. “We’re excited to host this event as a hub for open conversations on AI’s role in education.”
Practical Tools and Key Sessions
Shehroze Saharan leads U of G’s institutional AI strategy, guiding faculty through the challenges of AI in education. He and colleagues will co-host a session on setting clear, fair course-level policies for GenAI use. Their framework focuses on creating adaptable and equitable guidelines.
Dr. Lesly Wilton from the University of Toronto will deliver the keynote, “Navigating the Uncharted Waters of AI in Education.” Other sessions include:
- A panel of higher education students sharing how GenAI changes their approach to learning and creativity, and what they want educators to understand.
- A discussion on how AI tools affect disabled students and the important questions educators should consider when updating teaching methods.
Accessible and Affordable
The conference is offered at a low cost of $20, made possible by generous partners and speakers. The full program and registration details are available online, with registration open until June 5, 2025.
