UAE Introduces AI Curriculum Across Public Schools from Kindergarten to Grade 12

Starting in the 2025-26 academic year, the UAE will integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) education throughout its public school system. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced this initiative as part of the country’s long-term strategy to prepare students for future challenges and opportunities.

This initiative aims to equip students with practical AI knowledge and skills that can be applied in daily life. It also highlights the UAE’s commitment to empowering youth to keep pace with global technological trends and spur innovation. The UAE joins a select group of countries pioneering AI education at the school level.

Curriculum Overview

Sarah bint Yousef Al Amiri, Minister of Education, explained that the AI curriculum will be smoothly incorporated into existing school schedules without requiring extra class time. The curriculum features age-appropriate modules delivered within the broader subjects of Computing, Creative Design, and Innovation.

The program covers seven key areas:

  • Data and algorithms
  • Software applications
  • Ethical considerations in AI
  • Real-world AI applications
  • AI-driven innovation and project design
  • AI policies
  • Social engagement around AI

Teachers will receive comprehensive resources from the Ministry of Education, including activities, templates, and ready-made lesson plans adaptable to various classroom settings.

Objectives and Vision

Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the importance of not just teaching AI from a technical standpoint but also raising ethical awareness. He stated the goal is for students to grasp AI’s data, algorithms, applications, and risks, as well as its impact on society and daily life.

The curriculum prepares students with skills and knowledge essential for a future that will differ significantly from today’s world. This approach supports ongoing development and progress within the nation over the coming decades.

AI Learning Path by Grade Level

  • Kindergarten: Children engage with AI through visual and interactive activities, exploring digital technologies via stories and play.
  • Cycle 1: Students compare machines and humans, develop digital thinking, and discover practical AI uses.
  • Cycle 2: Focus shifts to designing and evaluating AI systems, understanding bias and algorithms, and promoting ethical AI use.
  • Cycle 3: Prepares students for higher education and careers by teaching command engineering and simulating real-world AI scenarios.

This comprehensive approach ensures students build a solid foundation in AI from an early age, gradually moving toward advanced concepts and applications.
