The UK government is investing nearly £30 million to roll out AI-powered diagnostic tools across England's National Health Service, a move that aims to cut waiting times and speed up diagnoses for millions of patients. The funding, part of the AI Diagnostic Fund under the Prime Minister's AI Exemplars programme, will see chest X-ray AI deployed in every NHS trust by 2029.

Healthcare leaders welcomed the investment but warned that successful deployment hinges on workforce training, digital infrastructure, and operational readiness. Without those, even the most advanced tools will fall short of their potential.

Where the money goes

Of the total, £20 million will expand the use of AI-powered chest X-ray analysis to all NHS trusts in England by 2029. The technology is already live in about half of trusts, where it has supported over four million patients with faster lung cancer detection or clearance. A separate £8.1 million from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) will fund trials of six AI and digital technologies across 13 NHS sites. These tools will review scans and cardiac tests, flag urgent cases, and deliver digital therapies for various conditions.

The chest X-ray AI helps radiologists prioritise suspicious findings, reducing the time from scan to diagnosis. In trusts where it's active, clinicians report that it catches cancers earlier and reduces the number of patients waiting for follow-up appointments. The technology does not replace human judgment - it acts as a triage assistant, highlighting images that need immediate attention.

Scaling AI requires more than software
