UK to Support Global Guidelines for AI Use in Schools, Announces Education Secretary Phillipson
The UK backs global standards for AI use in schools, investing £1.1M to support teachers and improve student outcomes. A summit next year will develop safe, effective AI guidelines.

UK Supports Global Guidelines for AI Use in Schools
The UK government is set to support international standards on the use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT in education. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson announced plans at the Education World Forum in London to position the UK as a leader in responsible AI adoption within schools.
Phillipson detailed a £1.1 million investment in a pilot program designed to explore how technology can ease teacher workloads, improve student outcomes, and promote inclusivity for children with special educational needs.
Prioritizing Safe and Effective AI Integration
“Setting AI on the right track now is the most important challenge for global education in a generation,” Phillipson stated. She emphasized that technology should free teachers to focus more on teaching, allowing students to receive greater attention and achieve higher standards. At the same time, teachers benefit from reduced paperwork and lower stress.
The UK will also host a summit next year to help develop these global guidelines. Current recommendations allow schools to decide how to use generative AI, provided they prioritize safety and comply with legal requirements. Importantly, schools should not use students’ work to train AI models without explicit permission.
Practical AI Applications Already in Use
The government is already applying AI to generate attendance reports, aiming to reduce student absences. This is just one example of how technology can support administrative tasks and create more time for teaching and learning.
Phillipson highlighted: “We’re using technology to free up teachers to spend more time teaching. For children that means more attention, higher standards, better life chances. For teachers – less paperwork, lower stress, fewer drains on their valuable time.”
