University of Toledo hosts forum on integrating artificial intelligence into classrooms

The University of Toledo will host a daylong forum on July 30 to help educators from preschools through universities integrate artificial intelligence into their classrooms. Registration for the event, which offers hands-on workshops and continuing education credits, closes July 16.

The THInC Forum: Education in the Era of AI is organized by the Judith Herb College of Arts, Social Sciences and Education's Herb Innovation Center. Now in its second year, the event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Thompson Student Union Ingman Room. It offers educators a chance to build practical AI for Education skills.

"Educators need practical AI literacy to prepare students for an increasingly AI-enabled world," said Dr. Michael Toland, a professor of education and director of the Herb Innovation Center.

Hands-on morning workshop

From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., attendees will get direct experience with widely available generative AI platforms including ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Educators will be challenged to build a standards-aligned lesson plan using these tools while addressing data privacy and district policy concerns.

Afternoon sessions on ethics and strategy

Afternoon sessions will cover practical and ethical dimensions of AI in education. Discussions will include classroom strategies and research-informed looks at how emerging technologies are changing education from preschools to universities. A final panel discussion is set for 4 p.m.

Attendees may earn nine continuing education unit credits (CEUs). Registration is open online until 6 p.m. on July 16, with limited on-site registration available at the door.

Why this matters for educators

The forum provides a rare chance to test multiple AI platforms in one day and earn CEUs. For educators looking to extend their learning beyond the event, an AI Learning Path for Teachers can offer structured, ongoing professional development on integrating AI into lesson planning and classroom management.
