U.S. Helps Sri Lanka Build National AI Policy for Universities

The United States is partnering with Sri Lanka to develop the country's first national artificial intelligence policy framework for higher education. The University Grants Commission requested American assistance, and the U.S. Embassy collaborated with Sri Lankan officials to create standards grounded in U.S. AI expertise.

The framework launched May 8 at the UGC, with U.S. Embassy ChargΓ© d'Affaires Jayne Howell and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya attending. Professor Usree Bhattacharya of the University of Georgia led the technical work.

What the Framework Covers

The policy provides guidance on integrating AI into teaching, learning, research, and university administration across Sri Lanka's 18 state universities. It emphasizes secure, transparent systems aligned with international best practices.

The development process included representatives from all state universities, policymakers, administrators, and industry leaders. The final version will be distributed to universities in June for implementation.

Why This Matters for Education Leaders

The framework positions American technology standards and approaches as the foundation for Sri Lanka's AI development in higher education. This creates pathways for partnerships between Sri Lankan institutions and American universities and technology companies.

For education professionals, the policy signals how AI adoption in universities can be structured around security and transparency rather than simply deploying tools. It addresses practical questions about integrating AI into existing teaching and administrative systems.
