Verizon and Corning signed a multi-billion dollar supply agreement through 2032 that locks in more than 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber and connectivity solutions. The deal, announced Tuesday, aims to expand consumer broadband access to 40-50 million passings while building a national long-haul backbone for AI hyperscalers - a single physical grid that serves homes, businesses, and the compute clusters powering large language models.
One network for broadband and mobile convergence
The fiber supply agreement accelerates Verizon's push to connect cell towers, enterprise data centers, and residential neighborhoods to the same high-capacity infrastructure. Kyle Malady, CEO of Verizon Business, described the approach as "a single, converged architecture that unites mobile connectivity and broadband into one seamless experience for millions of families and businesses." For customers, that means internet service that follows them from home to mobile without switching networks.
Corning will supply products including Corning® Contour™ Flow Cable, a flexible ribbon design that packs more optical fiber into existing conduit pathways. The cable choice matters because it lets Verizon increase network capacity without digging new trenches, stretching capital further across both rural and urban builds.
The physical layer of the AI economy
Generative AI workloads require near-zero latency and massive throughput between data centers. Verizon's AI Connect strategy uses ultra-dense fiber cables along major long-haul corridors to link facilities directly. The company already counts Amazon Web Services among its hyperscaler customers for this interconnect work.
"We are deploying a single, converged architecture… while simultaneously building the high-capacity, low-latency backbone AI hyperscalers demand," Malady said. "With Corning as our partner, we are securing the physical foundation of America's AI economy." The phrasing is ambitious, but the logic is straightforward: without fiber dense enough to move training data and inference traffic, the compute investments inside data centers stall.
Three decades of supply chain certainty
The agreement extends a 30-year relationship between the two companies. Mike O'Day, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Corning Optical Communications, said the partnership "demonstrates that Gen AI and broadband expansion are part of the same transformative opportunity." Corning plans to scale its U.S. manufacturing footprint to meet the order volume, which provides Verizon with domestic supply chain visibility through the end of the decade.
The fiber will serve dual purposes: last-mile connections for consumers and businesses, plus the trunk lines between AI compute sites. That dual-use model means Verizon does not need to build separate networks for separate customers - a cost structure that changes the economics of both broadband rollout and AI infrastructure leasing.
