AI Agents Now Get Their Own Email Inboxes
Virtuals Protocol has shipped a new feature that lets onchain AI agents manage email independently. The managed-agent capability gives agents dedicated inboxes to handle one-time passwords, verification links, and receipts without human intervention.
The feature addresses a practical problem. Most internet services still require email verification to function. An AI agent locked out of email verification is locked out of most commerce. Virtuals' solution bridges the gap between the onchain world where these agents operate and the Web2 infrastructure where most economic activity still happens.
What EconomyOS Does
EconomyOS is the operating framework Virtuals built to let AI agents function as economic entities. It combines onchain identity, non-custodial wallets, virtual payment cards, and email management into a single stack.
The email inbox is the latest addition. Agents can now sign up for services, verify accounts, and process purchase confirmations autonomously. They operate with an identity layer that works across both Web2 and Web3 systems.
Current Scale and Metrics
Virtuals Protocol operates on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network. The ecosystem has facilitated over 1.77 million jobs and generated approximately $479 million in what the project calls "Agentic GDP" - a measure of total economic output from its agent network.
The network currently runs roughly 17,000 agents. Those agents have achieved lifetime value exceeding $8 billion and process around 20,000 autonomous onchain transactions through smart wallets.
The Broader Vision
Virtuals describes its ambition as becoming "Shopify and Wall Street for AI agents." The Shopify comparison refers to making agent creation and management accessible. The Wall Street reference points to tokenized agent offerings, where investors gain exposure to specific agents through token markets.
For managers evaluating AI infrastructure, this represents a shift in how agents can operate. Rather than requiring constant human oversight, agents with independent email access can handle routine verification and administrative tasks themselves.
