Visakhapatnam Set for AI-Driven Traffic Management Overhaul to Curb Congestion and Boost Road Safety
Visakhapatnam is implementing AI-driven traffic management to reduce congestion and enhance safety. Automated violation detection and real-time challans will streamline enforcement.

Visakhapatnam to Adopt AI-Driven Traffic Management for Smoother Roads
Visakhapatnam is set to upgrade its traffic management system using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce congestion and improve road safety. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has started implementing AI-powered solutions to better regulate the city’s growing traffic.
Several IT companies, including Metafusion (Noida), NEC, Data Corp (Bengaluru), CMS Computers (Mumbai), and Brihaspati Technologies (Hyderabad), have already completed pilot projects in the city. These firms recently presented their proposals to key city officials, including MP M. Sribharat, District Collector M. Harendhira Prasad, City Police Commissioner Shankhabratha Bagchi, and GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg.
Key Features of the Proposed AI Traffic System
- Automated Violation Detection: The system will identify traffic violations such as overspeeding, helmetless riding, red-light jumping, illegal parking, and wrong-side driving.
- Real-Time Challan Issuance: Offenders will receive instant penalties through automated monitoring, improving enforcement efficiency.
- Facial Recognition Integration: This technology will help law enforcement spot individuals with criminal records or suspicious behavior and alert the police via a central Command and Control Centre.
- Dynamic Traffic Signal Synchronization: Signals at busy junctions will adjust automatically based on traffic volume, reducing wait times and easing congestion during peak hours.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg highlighted the urgency of adopting such advanced systems to keep pace with the city’s traffic demands. “AI-based traffic management systems are essential to streamline traffic flow and enhance enforcement,” he said.
Why This Matters for Management Professionals
For professionals managing urban infrastructure or city planning projects, integrating AI into traffic systems offers practical benefits:
- Data-Driven Decisions: Real-time traffic data allows for more precise planning and resource allocation.
- Operational Efficiency: Automated enforcement reduces the need for manual monitoring, freeing up personnel for other tasks.
- Enhanced Safety: Proactive identification of risky behaviors can lower accident rates and improve public confidence.
- Scalability: AI systems can adapt as vehicle numbers grow, making them a future-proof solution.
Visakhapatnam’s vehicle population has surged sharply, with over 1.5 million vehicles currently registered. Two-wheelers make up nearly 75% of this figure, increasing by approximately 40,000 every year according to traffic police records. This growth underscores the need for smarter traffic management.
